The HGT event at Higher Ground is this coming Sunday. Shanon and crew have put a lot of work into getting the course ready for the event. Here is what has been going on at Higher Ground over the past several weeks in Shannon Nealy’s words…

Higher Ground is BACK and ready for play!!
Thanks to a few really cool buddies of mine, who skipped a few of the many disc golf tournaments going on almost daily in this area, and came over to volunteer their valuable time helping….the course is now back in tip top shape again! We have taken it from the worst it’s ever looked this ti…me of year, to at least as good as it’s ever looked and played!

These are the people who actually made it possible. If ya see them, please thank them for their hard work. It’s only because of them we will have a nice course to play on this weekend.

Myself and Sandi of course…endless list of stuff…
Jo…sh AKA “Squash”: Weed eating and mowing king, as well as chainsawing and clearing limbs and debris….two full weekends straight…you da man! Helped fine tune the new holes too and got the campground all ready for campers again this year.
Ashley AKA “Trashley”: worked with Squash both weekends and mowed, cleaned up with leaf blower, cleared debris, helped build bridges, clean up new holes….rockin man!
“The Rock” Williams: Came all the way from 2 hrs down east, around Greenville, and brought the big ol John Deere rider one day. Took a shaggy, messy, freshly bush hogged course and left it looking like Augusta! Sweet!
Dave “Mansy” Mansfield: Came all the way down here from Rocky Ford with Plumber John and they both gathered limbs and debris, loaded on truck and trailer, and stacked on burn pile, helped us build and set up bridges in two crucial areas, huge help brothers! Thanks fellow course owner!
“Plumber John”: Helped with gathering and burning sticks and debris from all around course, and spreading dirt and cleaning up around fire pit, as well as building bridges! Last year PJ was the man who fixed the plumbing so we could have a working bathroom too! Thanks buddy!
Brad P. AKA “Trashbaby”: Helped with floating bridge and picking up sticks
Jason (not sure last name?): Brought Riding mower over and mowed greens and fairways where Rock didn’t get to go because bridge was out…) Right on time too!
Steven McLean: Let me borrow his basket for the second year in a row, in fact he had just got it back from loaning it to another local course for awhile, after it stayed here most of the year. Helped with stick and limb pickup. Thank ya neighbor!
Chris Temple: Got in the water with me and helped fix and setup the floating bridge to the other side of Middle Creek.

I hope I didn’t leave anyone out…it’s been a hectic week or three…

THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING THE COURSE BEAUTIFUL AGAIN!! :-) I was really worried.

The weather is supposed to be great so hopefully we will have a huge turnout and a great time!
See ya soon! There will be Glo Golf and camping Saturday night, maybe even Fri…call or come reserve a spot!

Chuckster,
Hey man could you please forward a message to the group that I need
some serious help out here getting ready for the tourney. The course has
been closed most of the year while I beat that nasty stage 5 cancer. I’m
getting my strength back now but I really need some help reclaiming the
course. Here are some pics of just part of it as it looks right now. I
took these yesterday while bush hogging. Got another few full days ahead
of me just doing that.
I need people with weedeaters, gas powered leaf blowers, rakes (I have
several available), and hands to pick up and move sticks, downed limbs,
and branches to the burn pile. I’m going to see if my neighbor will let
me borrow his riding mower for the greens and fairways. Mine is dead.
This course WILL look PREMO for the Homegrown if I have to work on it
every day from here out. I hope these pics don’t discourage anyone from
wanting to come this year. It will come together like always.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=29915

I will be available every day from now til the week before the tourney.
I do* not *want to be working on it after next Sunday if possible. We
all need time to practice on the prepared course. It hasn’t ever looked
this bad. I’m sorry but this year has been enough of a struggle just to
survive. I have no grounds crew left. PLEASE gang….we can still do
this. Let’s not wait til the last minute though. I can’t do that again.

Thank you in advance, anyone who can volunteer a little time, either on
the weekend or anytime during the week. I’ll be here every day. Sorry
Todd but I won’t be making it to Knotty Pines this year.

John “Stretch” Beckwith, a very good friend of mine and my strongest competition in the Pro Master division of the HomeGrown Tour has a great idea in mind for the rest of the HomeGrown season. For those of you interested in the following message please contact John or myself to see how you can contribute. I myself will match Stretch’s $2 per birdie with $2 per from my pocket as well. FYI, Stretch is legally blind too, which makes this double sweet! Maybe the birdies for the blind will help him recover full sight again, let’s hope so! Read on if interested.

Playing disc golf is a great way to relieve stress. It is also a way to get healthy by walking and breathing fresh air. It is fun for spectators to watch, and doggone it! It is just plain fun! Will you join me in using this game we all love so much to do good for others. I pledge to donate $2 for every birdie I get in the Home Grown Events for the rest of the year to the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Please pledge with me for each birdie OR just donate at blindness.org or phone 1800-683-5555.
Please give. Cures are very close for many diseases. You may know people who can benefit from ongoing research. Thank you John stretch Beckwith

The HGT event at Ace Run Ranch is just a few days away! Don Johnson, course owner, has been working hard on the course over the past few weeks getting it ready for the upcoming HGT event. For those of you wanting to get there early we will doing a round of random doubles Saturday afternoon as well as camping out that night.

I am planning on getting to the course around lunch time on Saturday afternoon to set up camp and prep for the afternoon doubles. At 4 p.m. we will be doing a round of random draw doubles. Entry will be $5, $2 to Payout, $2 to the course and $1 to ace pool (ace pool will be added to payout if not hit.) After the doubles is when we the real fun starts. The crowd that is camping out on Saturday night has plans of cooking a load of good food. I don’t know what the rest of the gang is planning on cooking but I am bringing some of my “famous” catfish and chicken wings to throw on the grill.

On Sunday morning things will resume as usual with registration for Sunday’s event starting at 8:30 a.m., players meeting at 10 and tee off at 10:30. Don will be cooking some food for lunch at $5 a head. If you don’t want to partake in what Don is providing I would recommend bringing your own food since there are not any restaurants within driving distanced of the course.

Hey Chuckster,
Could you please forward this to the group? Thanks bud!

Higher Ground has started our 2010 Summer Doubles and we need some more
people to bring their good vibes, and come join us for a fun round of
random draw doubles on Wednesday evenings.
Registration is from 5:15 to 5:45 PM with play starting at 6:00 PM
SHARP. Please don’t be late. If you are sure you can make it by no later
than 6:00, call in by 5:40 to get your name put in the draw. We will
draw names at 5:45. Please get here and get registered before then. If
you need directions, the course is listed in the PDGA Directory, or you
can call Shannon for directions ahead of time. Lots of you already know
that I have been fighting a fierce battle with head and neck cancer
since just after last Aug, when we had the Homegrown here. I have about
kicked it’s ass and I’m ready to play golf again! Please come join us!
The Homegrown will be back here again soon so now’s as good a time as
any to start practicing.
It’s $7 to play. That’s $3 to the course, $3 toward the cash payout, and
$1 to the ace pool, which will carry over from week to week til someone
hits an ace. There is a Cash CTP hole every week that costs $1 to get in
(optional). CTPs are welcome folks so bring a little something to put
up on a hole if you can. Lets make it a prizefest every week! Lots of
ace-able holes here too! We may alternate from blue course to red course
bi-weekly, to mix it up and keep things interesting, as well as get the
course and the players ready for Homegrown 2010. Those who have played
here know these are two completely different 18 hole layouts (with the
exception of three holes, which are part of both courses).

There have been complaints before about it taking too long to play, so
we want to keep the group sizes as even as we can, and down to a
reasonable number. We need more people to show up in order to do this.
If you only have ten people then a six & four can’t be helped. Bring
your buddies! Let’s get it /at leas/t up to 12 -20 players so we can
split into foursomes and get done a little faster.

I hope to see y’all!

We are just a little over a week away from the HGT event at Ace Run Ranch in Suffolk, VA. I just got off the phone with course owner Don Johnson and he has been working on getting his course in tip top shape for the event next weekend. I will be arriving on Saturday around 12-1 p.m. to set up camp and get things ready for a 4 o’clock round of random draw doubles. After doubles Don and I are going to fire up the grills and get our cook on. I am planning on grilling some catfish and chicken wings and Don has full intentions of matching my cooking with a grill of his own. Let’s get together and set up a “Tent City” at Ace Run Ranch to rival the one we had at DB’s this past winter. Don does have a bathroom and shower for those of you camping out as well.

Don will also be providing lunch on Sunday at $5 per person. He is not sure what will be served for lunch, but there will be something. If you do not want to eat what he is serving for lunch I would encourage bringing your own lunch, there is not any food within close driving distance. If you need directions to his course you can go to the PDGA website and find his course listed under ACE RUN RANCH in Suffolk, VA. You can find the directions and contact info there.

We had 91 people show up at Borrowed Time in Yadkinville this past Sunday. The weather was some of the best that I have ever played golf in and the crowd was a perfect size to allow us to get in 36 holes of HGT disc golf. A HUGE thank you to JG for allowing us to play on his course and having it in excellent shape. Brock Stimpson was the big winner of the day, hitting the $266 ace and cashing first place in the pro division adding another $100 and change to his already impressive take home.

The Yadkin County Bounty prizes were awesome as well. The three Yadkin county course owners and the Yadkin county disc golf club pooled their resources to give some of the best disc golf basket trophies I have ever seen to the winners of each division for the 09 YCB.

The next event is just a little over a week away at Sunshine Acres in Knightdale, NC. And and Clay Adams have been putting a lot of work into accommodating the ever growing HGT crowd by adding 2 more holes to the course making it a total of 20 holes. For those of you interested in helping the Sunshine Crew get the course ready for the upcoming event, Clay and Ann will be having a workday this coming Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m., followed by doubles in the afternoon. This is a perfect opportunity to meet the course owners of Sunshine Acres as well as helping put the finishing touches to the course before the event next Sunday.

For those of you wanting to play at Sunshine Acres prior to the HGT event, help at the work day or need directions contact Ann or Clay at: 919-266-3472 or 919-235-2406.

On a closing note I would like to go over some basic HGT course etiquette that seems to slipping by the wayside as of late. Private courses are a privilege to play and not to be taken for granted! Please remember that these courses are on a person’s PRIVATE and personal property, not to mention in their backyard. Respect the course owner’s rights by contacting them and getting permission before playing their course. Each course owner has individual rules and fees to play their course and it is YOUR responsibility to find out what they are and respect the rules and fees. Take into consideration how you would feel if a person that you don’t know or have only met once or twice was in your back yard cooking on your grill when you got home from work and you did not even expect them. I am sure that you would be less than pleased for this to be the case at your house. This is an analogy that is not far from the truth when it comes to a course owner arriving home from work to find a car or two in their driveway that they do not recognize and a group of people wandering around their property.

‘Nuff Said!
